If you are a teacher, I’m sure it’s not difficult for you to think of a time you found yourself complaining about professional development or found yourself listening to a colleague complain about PD. How is it that the people that always pushing others to be the best learners they can be are the same people that loathe their own learning process? It simply should not be this way. Teachers should be wholeheartedly embracing and modeling the process of being a life-long learner. I’m tired of giving and listening to complaints, I’m ready for a change. I have a vision in which teachers are passionate about learning again, a vision in which a collective groan is not heard when professional learning opportunities are mentioned. View the video below to gain more insight into my vision for professional learning. Behind the Scenes I knew the message I wanted to get across, I just wasn’t sure how to go about it. I considered a keynote, PowerPoint, series of info-graphics, video with teacher interviews, and finally settled on Prezi. A combination of Nancy Duarte’s, Presentation Zen’s, and David JP Phillip’s take on what visual presentation ought to be led me to this decision. I immediately looked to PowerPoint, but wanted to challenge myself a bit with something I’ve been intrigued by but rarely take the time to experiment with. I started by jotting down my ideas on paper, then moved toward creating my Prezi. I started with a template, then edited it to meet my needs. With the exception of my personal graduation photo, all of the graphics used were the ones provided by Prezi; I liked the cohesive look to it. My next step was to record a voice over for every section of my Prezi presentation. After stuttering through my first recording, I realized I needed a script and typed it out on my computer’s Sticky Notes. I used the Voice Recorder app on my computer, which was fairly easy to use. I didn’t like the finished product of my Prezi because the self-pacing didn’t seem to flow with my voice over, so I decided to do a screen recording. I used Movavi, which was also fairly easy to use and allowed me to directly upload my video to YouTube. This was definitely a learning process because I’m not very familiar with Prezi and this was my first time using Movavi, but I after much persistence I was able to bring my vision to life. References
