This past week I had the opportunity to attend the AVID Summer Institute 2017 in San Antonio, Texas. Once again, this was a wonderful learning experience. The AVID Summer Institute is composed of strands and site team meetings; the strands are specific to your role on campus or content area, while the the site team meetings are based on your campus. This summer I attended the strand titled, "Advancing the AVID Elective in MS/HS". The wonderful thing about this strand was that all of the members present were the AVID elective teacher at their campus and were searching for ways to improve the elective to better benefit the students. It was great to have the time to engage in conversation with members from one of my professional learning networks face-to-face in a structured setting. Through discussion and collaboration, we were able to draft up many ideas and set goals for the upcoming school year. Even if the AVID system is not present at your campus, I would encourage all teachers to attend an AVID Summer Institute as it offers a wide variety of strands you are bound to find one that will suit your needs. Additionally, this is not a "sit and get" type of workshop, the presenters do a phenomenal job of modeling various teaching strategies and therefore engage all participants.
My top 3 take-aways from AVID SI 2017 were the following:
