Introduction: The nationwide course description for the AVID elective class reads: "Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) is an academic elective course that prepares students for college readiness and success, and it is scheduled during the regular school day as a year-long course. Each week, students receive instruction utilizing a rigorous college preparatory curriculum provided by AVID Center, tutor-facilitated study groups, motivational activities and academic success skills. In AVID, students participate in activities that incorporate strategies focused on writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization and reading to support their academic growth.” (avid.org) In my district, students can join the AVID elective as early as 7th grade and can continue to be in the AVID elective every year until 12th grade. There are certain fundamental components of AVID that are used with fidelity in every elective class, no matter the grade level. Not all students are able to join in 7th grade, therefore have many gaps to fill when they join in 8th grade. The Introduction to AVID course will serve as a prerequisite in order to help ease the transition into this class. Learning Goal: Learners will be able to explain the foundational components of the AVID elective prior to entering the 8th grade AVID elective. Desired Results: Setting the Introduction to AVID course as a prerequisite to joining the 8th grade AVID elective will help ease the transition of new students into this class. In the past students have gotten overwhelmed by the Cornell Notes, Tutorial Request Forms, reflections, etc. and have opted to change their schedule. The reason for this is because they feel inferior to their peers that took the AVID elective class in 7th grade and seem much more experienced. This prerequisite course will help the new students have a better understanding of what to expect from this class. If all students understand the fundamental components of the AVID elective, then we will be able to start diving into the curriculum much sooner and have more time to work on projects throughout the school year. Audience: The audience for Introduction to AVID will be students transitioning from 7th grade to 8th grade that will be new to the AVID elective. If the pattern follows the same as other years, this should be approximately 20-30 students. Outcomes, Activities, and Assessments: Potential Materials for LMS (Schoology):
Organization for LMS (Schoology):
The modules will be based on AVID’s learning support structure, WICOR (writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization, reading). Additionally there will be an introduction and a summative module.
