Upon reflecting on my teaching practices, I identified communication with parents as a targeted area of growth for the upcoming school year. My students are part of an age group (12-14) that does not tend to have open communication with their parents. During parent teacher conferences, parents often express their frustration of not knowing what their kids are doing at school every day because when they ask, the answer is always "nothing." For the most part parents want to be involved, they just do not know how. It is my hope that my newsletters will serve at the very least as conversation starters. For example, rather than asking their children, "what did you do at school today?" parents could ask, "what was the activity with the spaghetti and marshmallows about?" The second question is much more likely to yield a detailed response. At the moment my plan is to publish a weekly blog post that will serve as the newsletter. The logic behind doing the newsletter via a blog post is that it will be eco-friendly, there will be no login required for easy access, and it should be simple to maintain once I develop the framework. A drawback I foresee is that I will have to obtain permission to post pictures/videos of the students and be mindful of the students that I do not receive that consent from. I would love to read your suggestions on what sections I should include in my weekly newsletters. Also, are there any other drawbacks to using blog posts to house my weekly newsletters?

What a great idea! To add a personal touch to the newsletters, I would suggest adding a "birthday shout-out" section.
