Designing the Introduction to AVID online course has definitely been a great learning experience. There are so many factors that I simply had not considered before. Through the process of developing this course, I could not help but think of how other electives could be improved by redesigning them into online courses. Unfortunately electives that are not athletics or fine arts can sometimes be thought of as a “dumping ground” for students that are not involved in those activities. I want to change this perspective by helping boost the quality of the elective classes. Transitioning to online courses would allow elective teachers to facilitate learning activities with a small group, while the rest of the class works on the online component. Two elective classes in particular that come to mind are Teen Leadership and Health. Teen Leadership is an elective aimed to her students develop their leadership skills. The teacher could make a bigger impact by providing more individual feedback during activities in which students practice skills such as a proper handshake, maintaining eye contact, and having good posture. While the teacher is facilitating these activities, the rest of the class could be receiving the content online. The students could learn about different leadership styles and qualities online, then practice their own face to face.
Health is an elective aimed at helping students become aware of their health and practice living a healthier lifestyle. From what I have understood, students learn a lot of terminology in that course. The students could easily access this information online and participate in online activities that reinforce the information. Face to face time could be used to perform small labs or engage in structured discussions about the topic at hand. For both courses, I think a hybrid or blended model would work best. Both courses could offer very valuable face to face experiences if the students were already well prepared with the online component.
